GEORGE NEWS - With Easter weekend starting this Friday, George Municipality has announced its readiness for expected increased traffic.
The municipality says the George municipal area will likely see higher volumes on major routes as families and international visitors travel across the country for holidays and religious observances.
“Our traffic teams are on high alert, with visible patrols and checkpoints planned to ensure safety on our roads,” said Janine Wells, chief of George Municipal Traffic Services.
Operations will focus on:
- Excessive speeding
- Reckless and negligent driving
- Driving under the influence
- Overloading of vehicles
- Compliance with safety belt and roadworthiness regulations.
Checkpoints will be set up on key routes, and public transport vehicles - taxis, midibuses and buses - will be inspected to ensure compliance with transport laws. These checks will also help address driver fatigue by encouraging rest periods.
Pedestrian safety remains a key concern, especially along the N2 highway. Ongoing awareness campaigns will continue on provincial roads within the municipal area.
Road safety tips for traveller
All drivers are urged to follow these essential tips:
- Obey road rules and carry a valid driver’s licence.
- Plan your route and allow ample travel time.
- Ensure your vehicle is roadworthy - check tyres, lights, brakes, and steering.
- Avoid overloading and night-time driving when possible.
- Rest well before driving and take breaks every two hours or 200km.
- Never drink and drive.
- Always wear your seatbelt and ensure passengers do the same.
- Maintain a safe following distance and reduce speed in poor weather.
- Be visible - drive with headlights on, and dip beams for oncoming traffic.
- Stay alert, avoid distractions, and drive defensively.
In foggy coastal areas, drivers are reminded to reduce speed and use headlights to maintain visibility.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility,” Wells said. “We ask all residents and visitors to be mindful of their actions and considerate of others.”
To report reckless driving or unsafe vehicles, contact George Municipality’s emergency number: 044 801 6300.
Wells wished all road users a safe and peaceful Easter weekend.
