GEORGE NEWS - The brilliant crime writer Deon Meyer was at the Groenkloof retirement home on Thursday, 16 November, for an enjoyable late afternoon gathering with residents and admirers.
He engaged in conversation with Marliza van den Berg, a well-known journalist and host of the television series "Op Soek na Eden", who interviewed him about his career, interests, and his latest book, "Leo," which was released in October.
The audience had the opportunity to hear fascinating anecdotes about his writing career, international travels for book launches, the writing process, thorough research he conducts before each book, the support he receives from his wife Marianne, and his interests beyond writing.
He also gave a brief reading from "Leo" as a teaser for those who haven't read the book yet. Bennie Griessel makes another appearance in the book, which contains all the elements of a captivating crime story.
Mel Bartlett, a huge admirer, drove from Sedgefield to meet Deon Meyer.Without giving away too much, Meyer shared that certain news events from about 12 or 13 years ago served as the "spark" for his latest story. About three years ago, he decided it was time to weave these events into a narrative.
Martin Barnard, the manager of Groenkloof and a Deon Meyer admirer himself, humorously suggested in his welcome that the author should set his next book in Groenkloof. Meyer agreed but amusingly warned the audience that Barnard would be the suffering party in the story.
Meyer was in George at the invitation of Nostalgie Café owners, Erica and Marius Gruber. Zorgvliet wine estate was also invited to offer a wine tasting, and guests enjoyed a platter with Leeuwenbosch Farm cheese.
Deon Meyer had to sign plenty of books.
