GEORGE NEWS - Christiaan Snyman, well known bass-baritone, will perform for the George Music Society this coming Tuesday, 19 November, at 19:30 at the Dutch Reformed Mother Church.
Christiaan will be accompanied by Dalene Brits in a performance of lieder by Strauss, Schubert, Brahms and excerpts from Dichterliebe by Schumann.
Tickets are available at the Arts Theatre during office hours, also online at www.georgemusicsociety.co.za as well as at the concert and costs R170 for public, R50 for children and only R120 for members.
The artists
Snyman studied at the Tshwane University of Technology and the University of Cape Town. He also studied with renowned singing teacher Nellie du Toit.
He started singing professionally in 2001 performing in concerts, opera productions and oratorios in Cape Town, Johannesburg, the State Theatre in Pretoria as well as Windhoek.
In 2009 he moved to Germany where he sang in the Opera Choir of the Stadt-Theater Koblenz for five years. There he also sang numerous roles such as the priest in The Magic Flute and the first soldier in Salome.
During his time in Koblenz he also sang as guest at the Kammeroper Frankfurt as Escamillo in Carmen and with Opera Classica Europa as priest, harnessed man and Sprecher in Zauberflote.
He performed in many other opera roles and performed in several oratarios such as Handel's Messiah.
In 2014 he became a freelance vocalist.
In 2019 he performed with the Manhattan Opera Studio in New York.
In 2023 he performed with Albie van Schalkwyk at the Wakkerstroom Music Festival, just after returning from Germany where he sang in a Wagner Gala at the Markgrafliches Opernhaus in Bayreuth.
Dalene Brits
Christiaan will be accompanied by local legendary pianist Dalene Brits.
Dalene Brits studied at the University of Cape Town where she obtained a BMus degree as well as two post-graduate diplomas in piano and singing.
She worked as repetiteur at the University of Cape Town Opera school and assistant conductor of the opera choir.
She performed as soloist and toured with the then Capab. Afterwards she was appointed as full-time pianist for the SABC.
In 2005 she was recognised as an 'Afrikoon' by the ATKV for her contribution to music in South Africa.
She also received the FAK honorary award for culture and in 2008 the Goprge Municipality recognised her for her contribution to music and culture.
