GEORGE NEWS - The 2023 Visual Expressions art exhibition of the South Cape Association for Visual Arts (Scava) is a feast for the eyes.
It was officially opened on Friday night, 1 September, in the Sayer's Auditorium at the George Museum. The exhibition runs until 30 September.
Art lovers can enjoy viewing 200 works entered by 66 artists.
Hermann Niebuhr, one of the judges, said they had a difficult task in selecting winners out of the entries that were of a high standard. He lauded Scava, saying that it is an invaluable organisation for artists in the area, and praised the entrants for being brave enough to do bring their work out into the public domain to have it evaluated.
Chairperson René Scribante said the dedication and hard work poured into every work was evident. She thanked all who entered, as well as the judges, for their involvement and effort.
Gert Bezuidenhout's painting, Proud Lion, was the overall winning entry.
The category winners were as follows:
Category 1: Landscape/Interior/Seascape/Urban landscape
- 1st place: Heinrich Botha – Richtersveld Soul
- 2nd place: Elizma Rudolph – Underwater Paradise
- 3rd place: Ferdo Voigt – De Rust Clouds
- Merit award: Trudie Hjul – Sultry Sunset

- Merit award: Zanne Small – All in White
Category 3: Portrait
- 1st place: Helen Burton - Hein
- 2nd place: Lynda Murison – Value of Emotion
- 3rd place: Susan Alexander – New Project
- Merit award: Karl Sembach - Beauty

Category 4: Abstract/Experimental/ 3D
- 1st place: Michelle Henn – Axel (Abstract Fish)
- 2nd place: Brenda Fantozzi – Arathorn (Eagle)
- 3rd place: Diane White – A Burst of Colour
- Merit award: Petro Farr – Swatches of Life
In the Abstract/Experimental/3D category, Michelle Henn's Axel (Abstract Fish) was the winning painting.
Category 5: Animal/Wildlife
- 1st place: Gert Bezuidenhout – Proud Lion
- 2nd place: Ferdo Voigt - Gaboon
- 3rd place: Anthea Ann Jennings – Sundowners Kgalagadi
- Merit award: Marietjie Smit – Gracious Blues
