GEORGE NEWS - Theatregoers enjoyed a little bit of Tennessee Williams, Henrik Ibsen, Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde and Euripides at the George Arts Theatre last week, paired with delicious tapas and vino.
On Saturday evening, 6 May, the theatre was abuzz with patrons lining up to receive their snacks for the night's entertainment.
"The purpose of Tapas Theatre is to expose audiences to different genres of theatre," said creative director Quintin van Biljon.
"It was also an endeavour to give directors an opportunity to hone their skills, and actors a chance to perform in what we call in the theatre world, 'straight plays'. In other words, plays that use pure acting, no singing or dancing."
The plays were directed as follows: Chrisma Theron (Medea); Elize Britz (Twelfth Night); Nelda Brandt (The Importance of being Earnest); Ilze Tulleken (A Doll's House) and Simoné Kleynhans (The Glass Menagerie).
Udy Obi, who holds the post as Group Editor's digital content producer, loves the George Arts Theatre where he performed for the first time in Tapas Theatre, since his relocation to George in 2017 as a student at Nelson Mandela University.
Obi played the role of Duke Orsino in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. He's been cast in Shakesperean productions since the age of sixteen, in Grahamstown.
