GEORGE NEWS - Fish Eagles Masters Swimming (Fems) is gearing up for the highly anticipated SA Masters Swimming Championships 2024, with an exceptional line-up set to represent the club.
Taking place at St Stithians College in Johannesburg from 13 to 16 March, this annual event promises thrilling competition and remarkable performances.
Among the standout members is 82-year-old Judy Dixon, a former teacher with an impressive swimming history, including 10 Midmar swims and multiple SA Masters Nationals. Dixon, determined to build on her previous successes, is primed to showcase her skills once again.
Joining her is Cheryl Griffiths, a newcomer to masters swimming after spending over two decades participating in the Cape Town Cycle tour. Despite her relatively short tenure, Griffiths is no stranger to competition, gearing up for her fifth nationals now in the 80-84 age group.
Attie and Niki Louw, veterans of masters swimming, bring a wealth of experience to the team. Niki's lineage in the sport runs deep, with her mother, the late Rae Smit, a legendary figure still competing at 90.
Their move to Witsand hasn't dampened their competitive spirit, as they aim to make their mark under the Fems banner.
Jill Black, a seasoned athlete, boasts an impressive resume with 19 SA masters nationals and numerous other sporting achievements.
Mandi and Cliff Wallace, a dynamic duo with a penchant for endurance events, add another layer of skill to the team. Their extensive list of accomplish-ments, including multiple Comrades and Iron Man races, speaks volumes about their dedication and athleticism.
Johan Kok, a former rugby player turned dedicated swimmer, has found a new passion in masters swimming, while Lanie Farrelly, known for her prowess in various sports, continues to impress with her versatility in the pool.
With members spanning across age groups, from the enthusiastic Elinor and elegant Jenny to the ever-determined Tanya Osborne, who will not be competing, but motivating from Abu Dhabi this year, Fems presents a formidable force ready to make waves at the championships.
Geographical distances and diverse backgrounds highlight the camaraderie and shared passion for swimming that unite this remarkable team.
