NATIONAL NEWS - The experienced Schalk Burger will return to rugby after a short injury layoff as captain of the DHL Stormers team that will embark on a two match Vodacom Super Rugby tour of Australia later in the week.
Burger takes the reins as he reaches the occasion of his last hurrah as a Stormers player.
The legendary loose-forward will be moving to England club Saracens at the end of the current Super Rugby season at the end of a career in the Cape that extends back to 2003 at senior provincial level.
After years of service without winning a major trophy with the Stormers, Burger will be determined to go out with a bang, and the next three weeks – their last regular season game is against the Southern Kings at Newlands – will determine whether he will get a chance to do so in a playoff game.
Burger gets to lead the team in the absence of both regular co-captains, Juan de Jongh and Frans Malherbe.
De Jongh is on Bok Sevens duty as he challenges for a place in the squad that will go to the Rio Olympics, while Springbok prop Malherbe sustained a neck injury in the series against Ireland. Malherbe will be out for three weeks.
