GEORGE NEWS - The Phangela SWD Eagles got a hiding last weekend when they lost 43-07 to the Sanlam Boland Kavaliers in Ceres. The Kavaliers were in control of the whole match, leading 21-07 at half-time during the third round in the Carling Currie Cup First Division. The match delivered a total of eight tries of which the Kavaliers scored seven and the Eagles only one.
About the reason for the heavy loss, SWD Eagles head coach Zane Kirchner said, "Discipline, discipline, discipline! The lack of discipline in any walk of life has an expensive price to pay. Our inaccuracy to utilise the opportunities presented will always be painful."
Following the weekend's match, the SWD Eagles remain fifth on the log out of six teams with five points. They are above the Border Bulldogs and below the EP Elephants. In their first match they lost at home against the EP Elephants (19-34) and in the second match they beat the Border Bulldogs (45-26) at home.
They have two matches left to qualify for the semi-finals - the Valke at home on Friday 5 July and the Leopards away on 13 July. "We are here to compete, execute our plan and to create a back door into this competition," said Kirchner.
Individual performances of SWD Eagles in the Currie Cup stats are: Rosco Syster has the fifth most tries with three. Sachin Toring has the third most conversions with six.
Kick-off on Friday is at 15:00 at Outeniqua Park and entrance is free.
