GEORGE NEWS - Sobhuza Boxing Club from George took second place in the Eden Region Open Organisation Championship in Knysna last weekend.
Seventy junior boxers from seven clubs attended the championship with seven clubs participating.
Three of the clubs came from Mossel Bay, one from Plettenberg Bay, two from Knysna and the Sobhuza Boxing Club from George.
The boxers, aged between 12 and 16, competed in the Cadet and Junior categories for boys and girls.
Hosted in collaboration with Knysna Municipality, the competition was held at Safe Hub in White Location, Knysna.
Special guests at the championships included Knysna Mayor Aubrey Tsengwa, Western Cape lightweight champion Mbuyisile Dukwane, acting sport director of Knysna Municipality Cheslyn Goldberg, German amateur boxing coach Mannfred Lutter and a former WBO International champion, Nqubela Gwazela.
Dukwane's presence was a boost for the young boxers and added to an atmosphere of excitement.
Nkosikho Makalima, chairperson of Eden Boxing, praised the municipality for its role in the event and for giving the young boxers the opportunity to showcase their boxing skills.
He said they are looking forward to take the highly motivated kids to the Western Cape Championship in Cape Town on 24 and 25 August.
Results
Phakamisa Boxing Club (Knysna) took first place, Sobhuza Boxing Club (George) took second place and the third place went to Garden Route Academy.
