DISC GOLF NEWS & VIDEO - Disc Golf George hosted the first round of its Autumn Disc Golf League on Saturday. A total of 27 players competed for points to qualify for the final play-off on 3 June, with players given the opportunity to play the course more than once.
Over 50 rounds were played.
About half of the competitors were completely new to disc golf, and after a brief introduction into the game they were paired with regular players to guide them through game play.
"Disc golf is one of those rare sports where players have fun from the beginning. Huge improvements on par score were seen in most of our new players by round 2, adding to the excitement that players experience when participating," said Leon Strauss, one of the organisers.
The next round will be played on Saturday 8 April at Rooirivier Rif. Players will need to attend 2 of the league events to qualify for the final round.
"Disc Golf is growing in George. We see new players join us with every event and George residents are purchasing their own discs from suppliers in South Africa," says Strauss.
The committee has grown with Bryan Wilson and Morné Galloway joining Strauss and the co-founder of the club, Gary Knoetze.

Disc Golf George has acquired six new baskets and new discs. They are actively looking for sponsors to support the development of the sport in George. Sponsorship branding opportunities for their events include tee sponsorship, baskets, discs and prizes.
"Disc Golf is considered to be one of the most inclusive sports worldwide and as a result has been one of the fastest growing sports for many years. Since 2017 the Professional Disc Golf Association has more than doubled its memberships," says Strauss. "Players not registered with PDGA are unmeasurable and account for a much higher growth."
There are over 6 000 18-hole courses worldwide and in most cases no fee is required to use them. "We intend to develop a permanent course in George, as well as get it sanctioned by the PDGA so that our local players can start getting international ratings for every game they play here.
"The potential for disc golfers to make George a tourist destination has already been seen with international players participating in our events."
