GEORGE NEWS - Three members of our local police force made the city proud when they brought home nine medals from the National Athletics Championships held in Tshwane last month.
Collectively, Guste Willemse (admin clerk, Thembalethu), Constable Riaan Tromp (Conville) and Constable Shaun Raubenheimer (Thembalethu) won five gold, a silver and two bronze medals.
Willemse is also the only athlete from George who was selected to represent the South African police at the National Masters Athletics Championships to be held in Bloemfontein from 25 to 28 April.
Tromp brought home gold in the discus, silver in javelin and bronze in the shot put. Raubenheimer took gold in his discus event and bronze in the javelin.
W/O Jonathan Hardnick joined the team as a national executive police athletics member and an official at the event.
These achievements contributed to the Western Cape dominating the competition by winning a total of 33 gold medals, 20 silver and 14 bronze. Gauteng and Kwazulu Natal shared second place.
"I want to congratulate our athletes on their excellent achievements," said acting cluster commander Brig Phindile Cetyana last week. "The entire Eden cluster is extremely proud of them and appreciates the immense effort they have put in to get this far. This kind of achievement takes physical, mental and spiritual strength and if you lack just one of them you can't be successful. They are young, active and vibrant officers who give the community hope. They are local and national ambassadors and we celebrate their successes with them."
