BOXING NEWS - For the first time in the Eden region, on Saturday 19 April, George Municipality hosted the one-day Easter boxing tournament in the Rosemoor community hall.
The Western Cape Open Boxing Organisation’s president, Andrew Pukeng, who was one of the match officials, said it was a well-organised and successful tournament.
He said boxing in the Eden Region is developing and increasingly incorporating female boxers. Pukeng said he can see the numbers of females in what was traditionally a man’s sport are growing in the Western Cape and across the country.
Former South African junior bantamweight champion Theo Modise and 2024 SA gold medallist Qhamani Madolo also attended the tournament.
Ten boxing clubs across the Garden Route District and Central Karoo took part - the hosts, Sobhuza Boxing Club, SASL Divinus Boxing Club Academy, Masizakhe Boxing Club, Ikhaya Boxing Club (Mossel Bay), Masibulele Boxing Club (Mossel Bay), Garden Route Boxing Club Academy (Mossel Bay), Ikamvalethu Boxing Club (Knysna), Phakamisa Boxing Club (Knysna), Sonqoba Boxing Club (Plettenberg Bay) and the newly formed Absolom Boxing Club (Beaufort West).
