GEORGE NEWS - The Karate-Zen George Dojo proudly celebrates a remarkable achievement by its chief instructor, Sensei Mareon Ferndale, and his son, Trevor, who both reached major karate grading milestones during a special grading weekend in Cape Town on 29 November.
Mareon was awarded his fifth dan (Godan), earning the prestigious title of Shihan, a recognition of advanced skill, leadership and years of dedication to the Goju-ryu martial art.
Adding to the celebration, Trevor, now a university student, successfully graded from brown belt to first dan (Shodan), officially becoming a black belt Senpai.
The father-and-son milestone is a proud moment for the Karate-Zen George community, reflecting years of dedication, discipline, and a shared passion for martial arts. Their achievement serves as an inspiration to students of all ages and highlights the importance of mentorship, perseverance, and family values in the dojo.
Karate-Zen George currently operates two dojos in Heather Park and Pacaltsdorp. A third dojo is scheduled to open in Blanco (Napier Street) in February 2026, further expanding access to quality karate training in the region. The new facility will continue to promote disciplined martial arts, leadership development, and community engagement.
This dual milestone honours personal accomplishment while reinforcing Karate-Zen George’s commitment to nurturing skill, resilience, and a lifelong love of martial arts across generations.
