CHESS NEWS - The Wilderness Chess Club will host a Garden Route first when its Freestyle Chess960 Tournament takes place at the Fairy Knowe Hotel on Sunday 11 October.
What makes this event a first for the region is that every player competes in one single field, rather than being separated into U11, U13, adult and other sections.
This gives younger players a rare opportunity to sit across the board from some of the region’s strongest players, while neither side has to worry about the result affecting their chess rating.
The tournament has already attracted most of the top players in the Garden Route, with entries coming from across the region, including Knysna and Riversdale.
There is also plenty to play for, with R20 000 in prize money plus about R6 000 worth of spot prizes, including a prize for the best dressed. Entries are limited to 80 players.
