GOLF NEWS - GolfRSA Elite Squad duo Zethu Myeki and Sarah Bouch will face a former top ranked South African and an unheralded Namibian in the hunt for the final two spots in this year’s Sanlam South African Women’s Amateur Championship at Stellenbosch Golf Club.
Serengeti’s Bouch defeated local favourite Bianca Lobhauer 5 & 4 in round three and the University Sport South Africa champion mowed down Western Province junior Jordan Rothman 8 & 6 for a spot in the semi-finals.
Myeki eliminated Western Province junior Kaylah Williams 3 & 2 to reach the quarter-finals, where she had a much tougher time getting past Lindi Coetzee.
The East London Golf Club player led 4-up through 12 holes, but three successive holes to open the door for the Gauteng North player. Coetzee didn’t make the most of her chances, though, and Myeki went 2-up with a par at 16 and bagged the 2 & 1 win after the pair halved the 17th hole.
Jessica Dreesbeimdieke from Windhoek dispatched Chiara Contomathios 3 & 1 before she downed Danielle du Toit lost 2 & 1 to book her spot in the final four.
The first quarter-final match between Western Province’s Cara Gorlei and Boland junior Crystal Beukes lasted the longest.
Gorlei from Milnerton Golf Club beat Larissa du Preez from Gauteng North 4 & 3 and Beukes downed Gauteng’s Symone Henriques 5 & 4 at her home club.
A finalist last year, Gorlei took first blood and led 2-up through the first two holes, but Beukes hit back with successive birdies to halve the match. Beukes surged to 2-up birdies at the third and fourth holes and kept the lead as the duo halved five straight holes in pars and shared 11 in bogeys.
Gorlei was able to close out victory at the 19th hole after Beukes stumbled over the last six holes with a trio of bogeys and three birdies.
The University of Arkansas player will attempt to go the full distance after losing out to
Lumien Orton last year, but Bouch has title hopes of her own. Myeki might have the toughest match, though, when she takes on the relative unknown Dreesbeimdieke in the second semi-final.
The Plate Division semi-finalists are Cleo Jordaan from Gauteng North, Boland’s Lynne Behagg and Womens Golf Western Province HPC Coaching Programme squad players Aaliyah Abrahams from Rondebosch Golf Club and Jessica Green from Clovelly.
