GEORGE GOLF NEWS - Kingswood Golf Club has received the John Collier Top Club Award for 2017-2018. The John Collier Survey annually collects and publishes data on good governance concerning environmental protection and preservation from golf clubs throughout South Africa. The reviewers then re-visit the questionnaires to determine which clubs had submitted the most comprehensive reports, and clubs that have showed that they identify and comply with the objectives, are awarded.
The Top Club Award is given to coincide with WED (World Environment Day), which is celebrated on 5 June, to stimulate awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and public action.
Each year's WED is organised around a theme that focuses attention on a particularly pressing environmental concern. The theme for 2018 is beating plastic pollution.
The reviewers' report says that Kingswood Golf Club "has clearly demonstrated on an ongoing basis" that they have identified with and are actively engaged in the WED theme of taking ownership of their environment and protecting it.
The reviewers were most impressed with the club's balanced approach to reporting on sustainability, good governance and environmental compliance, as illustrated by its using an environmental management plan as foundation on which they are building in increments.
Kingswood's management of waste also aligns with the WED theme of beating plastic pollution. The club's report shows that they clearly understand the three pillars of golf's Sustainability Agenda, namely environmental, social and economic issues, through their action plans and data collection.
Since the Sustainability Agenda would not be upheld without committed and passionate people who embrace the benefits of sustainability underpinned by good governance and environmental compliance, the report makes special mention of the owners of Kingswood Golf Club, Lisel Niehaus and Mike Quinn, the course designer and greenkeeper Danie Obermeyer and the head coach, PGA professional Robert Wiederkehr.
