GEORGE NEWS - Local soccer player Thandolwethu Sigxina (19), 'Thando' for short, was selected to represent South Africa in France as part of a group of talented young footballers.
Thando, who currently plays for George Vultures FC in Thembalethu, was identified after impressing the Southern Cape Sports selectors last week at Eden Technical High's sport fields.
For this goalkeeper, who grew up in tough circumstances, going on this tour would make all the hardship worthwhile.
Calling for support
To achieve his dream of going to France, Thando is asking the communities of George to support him. The France Sport Tour is scheduled to take place from 3 to 12 October during the school holiday.
Humble beginnings
Thando was born in Elliotdale in the Eastern Cape. He grew up kicking the ball on the streets in a humble village called Dabane A/A.
His journey was not easy - he was raised by his grandparents who worked tirelessly to provide for him. He completed grades R to nine at Nyangilizwe JSS in Elliotdale.
Later, he moved to George to live with his biological mother, who was working and supporting him as a single parent until he matriculated from Jonga High School in 2024. He had aspirations to further his studies at university, but he was not selected.
However, his passion for soccer, which began at a very young age, remained promising and strong. He decided to follow his football dream.
To be able to fly the South African flag high, he needs a total of R55 000, which he has to raise by 10 September.
Thando said anyone's contributions will not only be a financial investment, but also a vote of confidence in his ability and potential. This young man is eager to represent South Africa.
