SOCCER NEWS - Simunye Football Club boosted its regional league survival hopes with an emphatic 3-0 victory over the Black Cats in a thrilling Safa Eden Regional Men's League derby at Lawaaikamp Stadium on Sunday.
Despite sitting at the bottom of the log, the former champions produced a spirited display against their local rivals.
The Black Cats started brightly, pressing for an early opener, but Simunye struck first on the counter-attack. A foul in the box handed the hosts a penalty, and the 17-year-old Yongama 'Gamee' Koeberg calmly converted to give his side a 1-0 half-time lead.
The Black Cats pushed hard after the break, stringing together neat passes in search of an equaliser. However, Simunye's defence held firm and goalkeeper Nkosikhona Moss proved difficult to beat.
Simunye doubled their advantage when Luzuko Sabelesiva delivered a pinpoint cross from the right, allowing Siyabonga 'Mpumlo' Miggels to finish clinically for 2-0.
As the Black Cats chased the game, Koeberg sealed the victory with his second goal, beating goalkeeper Liwonga Siko to make it 3-0.
The result leaves the Black Cats in the lower half of the table on 20 points, while Simunye climbed up to 17 points, reigniting their push for a top-eight finish.
Speaking after the match, Koeberg, a Grade Nine learner at the George Royal Academy, said he dreamt of becoming a professional footballer and was proud to help his team secure a crucial derby win.
