SOCCER NEWS - The Nelson Mandela University team, Madibaz, missed the chance of playing in the Easter soccer final after going down 2-1 against Simunye FC in a much-anticipated first semi-final encounter at Thembalethu Stadium last Saturday morning.
Bukho Makhele and Siyabonga 'Mpumlo' Miggels contributed the two crucial points for Simunye and Emile Jansen scored the solitary goal for the students' team.
The game started at a fast pace as both teams pushed for the first goal. Makhele scored the first one within five minutes.
The students' backline was working overtime trying to defend the strong attack from Simunye's wingers. Miggels doubled the score to make it 2-0, after beating Madibaz goalkeeper Masixole Dayizana.
Both teams played great touches during the last moments of the first half, when the whistle blew.
The second half saw both teams looking very sharp on the ball. But the stubborn Simunye defenders made it difficult for the NMU players to penetrate.
The Madibaz players were hunting for their first goal using the pace of Emile Jansen. Both teams were more dangerous on the flanks. Jansen netted the first goal, putting his side on 2-1.
Simunye tried their best to score more goals during the last minutes of the game. As it was, the exciting semi-final Geolfa Easter game ended on high note, with Simunye booking their place in the final.
