FOOTBALL NEWS - The Lawaaikamp giants, Black Cats Football Club, have to spend another season in the regionals after failing to win the Safa Eden Regional Men's League title earlier this month.
Black Cats, better known as Ikati Emnyama, ended their 2022/23 season sitting in second position on the Regional League table.
They played 30 fixtures with 17 victories and 7 draws; they were defeated six times, scored 67 goals, conceded 33 goals, and earned 58 points for the entire season.
This Lawaaikamp-based side started the 2022/23 season in a positive spirit after spending one season in the Western Cape ABC Motsepe Provincial League, but it was one of the difficult seasons in the Provincial League and they found themselves in a precarious position. They were relegated to the lower division, Safa Eden Regional league.
The Cats lost in the Safa Eden title race after failing to collect positive results in their last fixtures of the season, allowing the Plettenberg Bay outfit Oriented Birds to sit comfortably at the top of the log.
The high-flying Birds were crowned as the new Safa Eden Champions after winning 26 league games with four draws, claiming the Regional League tittle in style and undefeated.
Relegation candidates in the Safa Eden are two teams from George - Raul Stars FC and Young Pirates FC. Both sides failed to collect positive points in their league campaign. They are now sitting right at the bottom of the Regional League table.
The top team will be representing Eden in the upcoming third division playoffs for the Western Cape ABC Motsepe Provincial League for the 2023/24 season.
The Western Cape Regional League Championship will take place on 1 and 2 July at Goldsmith sport ground in Velddrif on the West Coast. The top two teams in the third division playoffs will be automatically promoted to the Western Cape ABC Motsepe Provincial League.
Luyanda Laho of Black Cats controls the ball against Khanyisani Radebe of Oriented Birds.
The 6 Western Cape Regional League winners are:
- Junction Rovers - Safa Cape Town;
- WC Fleetwood - Safa Overberg;
- Oriented Birds - Safa Eden;
- Amabhantinti - Safa West Coast;
- Barcelona - Safa Central Karoo;
