GEORGE NEWS - South African cricket experienced a historic day on Sunday 15 December when the Proteas Women played on their home ground for the first time in 22 years in a four-day match against England.
Even more significant was that both on-field umpires were also women.
"This hasn't happened before," said Kerrin Klaaste, who was one of the two women umpires to make history by being the first to officiate a Protea Women's game.
Both umpires, Klaaste and Lauren Agenbag, made their women's cricket debuts along with the match referee, Shandré Fritz.
Klaaste, from Knysna, has been part of the South Western Districts Umpires Union since 2021 and also serves on the reserve panel of the Cricket South Africa Umpires Panel.
There are currently three females on South Africa's umpires panels.
