CRICKET NEWS - Thanks to a record-breaking unbroken partnership of 151 runs for the third wicket between Julia Hoal and Izel Cilliers, the Garden Route Badgers women defeated the Dolphins by eight wickets in their Hollywoodbets Pro 50 series encounter at Kingsmead in Durban on Saturday 25 October.
The victory was undoubtedly the biggest achievement for women’s cricket in the SWD.
Two weekends ago, the Badgers women had also rolled over the Western Province.
The Dolphins, who batted first, were in trouble at 23/3, but a fine partnership of 116 runs for the sixth wicket between former Badgers player Micaela Andrews (74 from 68 balls) and Shesnie Naidu (55) took the home side to a competitive 243/6.
Nicolien Janse van Renburg (2/35) and Yolandi Potgieter (2/30) each bagged two wickets.
The Badgers’ run chase was anchored with a brilliant maiden century for Hoal, who made 105 not out (148 balls; 12x4). She received valuable support from the Irish international, Gabby Lewis (47), and Cilliers 70* (75 balls; 1x6, 9x4).
In the Pro 20 match on Sunday, the Dolphins turned matters around with a five-wicket victory. The Badgers, who batted first, were in big trouble at 25/5, but Cilliers (52*) and Nadine Moodley fought back to enable a defendable total of 127/7. The Dolphins (130/5) recorded victory with an over to spare.
