Even with a whole day’s play lost, South Africa were just too good for India, who slumped to 135 all out, only Virat Kohli and R Ashwin offering significant resistance.
There were still 34 overs left to be bowled in the day, which shows just how dominant South Africa were in closing the game out.
Earlier in the day, India dared to dream, and set themselves up perfectly for what would have been a rare and historic win away from the comfort of home conditions, picking up the last eight South African wickets for just 65 runs, bowling the hosts out for 130 in the second innings and leaving themselves with a chase-able target of 208.
And then, reality bit, as South Africa’s quick bowlers, even with the magnificent Dale Steyn not able to bowl, came roaring through, hunting as a pack and swarming all over India’s batsmen.
