GEORGE NEWS - The South African Sprint Triathlon Championships took place in Benoni this past weekend, and it proved a happy hunting ground for triathletes of the Eden triathlon club, with a haul of six medals coming back to the Garden Route.
The CR Swart Dam was the venue, and Mother Nature delivered a challenging day, with choppy water and cold, rainy weather.
An out-and-return cycle leg was spectator friendly, before the run dished up a tough, hilly course.
Despite it being the SA nationals, there was a strong contingent of athletes from Mauritius, Zimbabwe and Namibia, 16-year-old Karli Lötter grabbed her second silver medal in two weeks in the girls u.17, with a bronze going to Eden's Amelia Manning.
The boys u.13 saw gold for Wanru Haasbroek, and bronze for Cameron McEwan, both of from Eden, with Johannes Brink taking the gold in the boys u.15.
In the men's 60-69 sprint, Eden's Dave Savage took the silver to add the final medal to a successful weekend of racing for the Garden Route triathletes.
Eden's Johannes Brink won the boys u.15 category. In second place was Buhle Tshabalala from Tshwane and Cameron Hodge from Cape Town Unicity Triathlon.
Eden took two of three medals in the boys u.13 category. Gold went to Wanru Haasbroek, silver to Calan Goetsch from KwaZulu-Natal and bronze to Cameron McEwan from Eden.
