SCHOOL NEWS - MM Mateza Primary School in Thembalethu held a talent festival for its Grade Seven learners at the Inkcubeko Youth Centre on Saturday afternoon, 8 November.

The event was organised by the D-Lab Interns of the Inkcubeko Youth Centre, in partnership with the school, to create a platform on which every Grade Seven learner had the opportunity to showcase their uniqueness on stage.

The learners and parents were welcomed by the principal, Bhekithemba Lugayeni, and the programme director, Ayakha Motyeke, who called on the parents to be involved and help their children in their schoolwork, pointing out that different children have different strengths and weaknesses.

An atmosphere of excitement hung over the venue as the learners went on stage to showcase their talents.

The event kicked off with an English spelling competition, followed by a reading competition in which the learners' literacy and comprehension skills were demonstrated.

Through the rest of the afternoon, the parents were thoroughly entertained by plays, a choir performance, a dance performance, a traditional performance, some poetry and an art and drawing display.

Six contestants received certificates for exceptional performance in the English spelling and reading competition. In the reading competition, first place went to Inam Zilindile, second place to Namhla Mnqayana and third place to Asithandile Filiziwe.

In the spelling competition, Iviwe Henry took the first spot, followed by Inam Zilindile in second and Asemahle Mkunqwana in third.
