GARDEN ROUTE DISTRICT POLITICAL NEWS - The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) Western Cape has welcomed the election of Ian Uys as MPAC chairperson for the Knysna Municipality.
In a statement, MPP Western Cape ACDP leader Dr Ferlon Christians said Uys has been serving on council for the past two years. He was also a ward candidate for the ACDP in the 2016 Local Government Elections.
He has been involved in politics for more than thirty years. In the 1989 General National Election he was a candidate for the Democratic Party (DP), which assisted in removing apartheid from the statute books. Uys also served the residents in his capacity as chairperson of the Knysna Ratepayers Association.
“What makes the ACDP councillor perfect for the position is that the ACDP is the only party with an unblemished record with regard to fraud and corruption,” said Christians. “This is in line with what is expected from the MPAC chairperson to effectively exercise oversight over the executive of the council and to ensure good governance.
“His B Com degree and 45 years as a chartered accountant are excellent credentials for the post. As MPAC chairperson he will deal with mainly financial information and his skills and expertise will come in handy to execute his duties efficiently and effectively.”
According to Christians, Uys was awarded the De Wet Decoration for commando activities during the Border War, has written more than 30 books, mainly on military history, been a Rotarian for 45 years and is a sportsman of note. He was awarded South African University colours for boxing and completed ten Comrades marathons – beating Wally Hayward twice (granted Hayward was an octogenarian at the time).
On a recent issue of rates, Uys was the only councillor to insist on retaining the municipal cash flow. After provincial government input, at the next meeting the whole council sided with him.
