From midnight, motorists can expect to fork out 12 cents more for 93 and 95 octane petrol.
The Energy Department says increases in the international prices of petroleum products have contributed to the adjustment.
However, the department says the strengthening of the rand against the dollar has helped cushion the effect of the increase by 25 cents.
Chief economist at Econometrix, Azar Jammine, says consumers shouldn’t expect to be hard-hit by the increase.
“Petrol itself only accounts for six percent of everything that consumers spend so we’re really looking at an increase in the cost of petrol of around R5 for every R1,000 that people have. The main reasons for the fuel price adjustments in May include the average increase in the prices of petroleum products in the international markets as well as the strengthening of the rand against the US Dollar during the period under review which cushioned the price adjustments by over 25 cents per litre."
