NATIONAL NEWS - The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has appealed to the public to be cautious during rough weather conditions as the SA Weather Service has warned of rough seas and inclement weather this weekend on the east coast from Mossel Bay to Plettenberg Bay, and then further north towards KwaZulu-Natal.
The appeal comes after the body of a teenager, drowned after a school outing to Jabula Beach at St Lucia, was recoverd on Friday after being dragged underwater by a rip current – and the NSRI has issued a warning to all those using the ocean in the coming days to be vigilant.
On Thursday the St Lucia NSRI duty crew and iSimangaliso Wetland Park Rangers were called to Jabula Beach at St Lucia, following a drowning in progress.
The 16-year-old male learner went missing in the surf and was believed to have been caught in rip currents before disappearing under water while wading during a school outing.
His body was located by rangers in the surfline at First Rocks, and retrieved by NSRI rescue swimmers.
