Madonsela could ask treasury for cash to probe Guptas

NATIONAL NEWS - The Public Protector’s office has confirmed it is considering approaching the National Treasury for funding to investigate allegations of State capture levelled against the Gupta family by a church group, a Member of Parliament and leader of the opposition Mmusi Maimane.

Two complaints about the Guptas alleged influence over the government have been laid with the Public Protector by the Dominican Order of Churches of Southern Africa.

The Public Protector says while it’s still deciding whether to probe the complaint by the church group, it’s obliged to act following Maimane’s request.

This, it says, is because it was submitted under the Executive Members Ethics Act.

Spokesperson Oupa Segalwe says asking for money from the Treasury is unprecedented.
