“Two Nyoni warrant officers, aged 48 and 59, were on duty visiting the police cells when one officer was overpowered of his firearm by the suspects and fired shots at both officers,” Major Thulani Zwane said.
One of the policemen fired back and fatally shot one of the suspects, who faced several charges of robbery. The second suspect managed to escape, Zwane said.
The officers died in hospital, on Thursday evening and Friday morning.
KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni strongly condemned the killing of the two officers.
