Reports from the scene indicate that a boy had swum out to sea to save a teenage girl who was in difficulty when he was caught in the rip current.
Bystanders managed to pull the two onto the beach, but the boy was unresponsive.
Netcare 911 paramedics had to cross the railway line and clamber down a steep embankment with their equipment to get to the secluded beach.
When they reached the patient, they found a member of the public performing very effective CPR.
