As per the previous disguised images, the Jimny, which in its current guise has remained largely unchanged since debuting in 1998, retains its rather boxy exterior and spare wheel mounted on the tailgate, with the now familiar five-slot grille and flared wheel arches also being carried over. The biggest changes externally are rounded headlights with separate indicators, new front bumper, a lowered roofline and square rear windows.

More noticeable though, the interior continues with the square theme in the form of a new touchscreen infotainment display, square instrument cluster pods for the rev-counter and speedometer, new HVAC controls and air vents, redesigned dashboard and a new steering wheel taken from the Swift.

Up front, the Jimny will reportedly dispense with the current 1.3-litre petrol engine for the same 1.2-litre and 1.0-litre Boosterjet engines also used in the Swift, while Japanese models will come equipped with a 660 cc turbocharged engine. The current Jimny's ladder frame chassis will also be retained, but with the brand's multi-mode AllGrip all-wheel drive replacing the current four-wheel drive setup.

According to reports, the new Jimny will make its world debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in October.
