According to Autocar, the fourth generation’s debut will likely take place in October, coinciding with this year’s Tokyo showpiece and some 20 years after the current model first launched.
While the Jimny is expected to retain its boxy exterior, and based on the latest as well as previous images, the tailgate-mounted spare wheel and five-slot grille, it will get rounded headlights, a lowered roofline, new wheel arches, squared off side windows and a new front bumper.
Spied by the publication alongside the current Jimny testing in the UK, and featuring a profile similar to that of the Mercedes-Benz G-class, the Jimny will also be thoroughly updated inside, where leaked images showcased a square theme for the HVAC switches, the new infotainment system, instrument cluster and air vents, a steering wheel taken from the Swift and a new dashboard.
The article further states that the Jimny will keep its low range gearbox, indicating that will not adopt an all-wheel drive configuration as previously reported.
Although Suzuki has remained mum on engine options, motivation could come from the 1.0-litre Boosterjet three-cylinder or 1.2-litre normally aspirated petrol powering the Swift, while in Japan, where it is classified as a kei car, a turbocharged 660cc mill will provide motivation. A diesel engine option has meanwhile been ruled out due to low demand in parts of Europe.
More information is expected to emerge in the coming months.
