According to indianautosblog.com citing details from Yahoo Japan, the reveal of the fourth generation Jimny will come exactly 20 years after the current model, which eventually went on sale in 1998, bowed at the same event, with production of the newcomer reportedly set to commence in February next year.
First shown testing last week before being leaked in a series of what appears to be screen grabs hours later, the Jimny, based on the latter snaps, retains its boxy exterior, tailgate mounted spare wheel and five-slot grille, but features a lowered roofline, round headlights, square side windows no longer cutting into the body, and a new front bumper.
The biggest departure from the current model though is the interior, which receives the same steering wheel as the Swift, a completely redesigned dashboard, square instrument cluster pods for the rev-counter and speedometer, new HVAC switches and a square touchscreen infotainment system.
Retaining its ladder-frame chassis, the Jimny will comes fitted with Suzuki's AllGrip Pro all-wheel drive system, and the same 1.2-litre petrol engine as the Swift with the 1.0-litre Boosterjet three-cylinder likely to feature as well. In its home market, where it is classified as a kei car, the Jimny will be outfitted with a 660 cc turbocharged engine.
More details are expected to emerge leading up to its Tokyo reveal.
