In a statement, the Russelsheim automaker said that, as part of its PACE! plan, eight all-new or refreshed models will be offered within its model ranges. Included in this will be the eagerly awaited new Corsa, Vivaro and Mokka X.
Later on, a plug-in hybrid version of the Grandland X will become available as well as the all-electric Corsa, and more than likely a brand-new Astra that will switch from the current General Motors (GM) derived D2XX platform, to PSA’s EMP2.
The restructuring process will have however result in some models not making the cut, with Opel confirming that the axe will come down on the entry-level Karl and its Vauxhall Viva equivalent in the United Kingdom, the Adam boutique hatch and the open-top Cascada.
Earlier this year, the automaker confirmed it had ended production of both the Zafira MPV and the three-door Astra GTC, as well as the crossover inspired Adam Rocks.
“In a context of drastic CO2 norms, it’s our responsibility to shape a sustainable future for our company and our dealers with a highly competitive portfolio for passenger and light commercial vehicles.Opel will offer fun to drive and emotionally designed models including highly competitive light commercial vehicles such as the new Combo and Vivaro,” CEO Michael Lohscheller said in the statement.
“The customers will benefit from the broad introduction of innovative technologies and affordable electrification. The most recent awards – like the IVOTY 2019 for our Combo – demonstrate that we are on the right path”.
Meanwhile, the brand’s flagship model, the Insignia, has been spied sporting extensive disguise at the front, suggesting a possible facelift despite having only been on sale since February last year.
Snapped by motor1.com in Sports Tourer guise, the online platform claims the masking could point to the testing of a new derivate, with an additional claim being the implementation of Opel’s “Bold and Pure” styling language that debuted on the GT X Experimental concept two months ago.
While these claims are purely speculative, the article also points to suspicious pieces of tape at the base of the rear doors, claimed to hide wires that could possibly be the testing of a new engine used in the Peugeot 508. Given that the Insignia, sold in Australia as the Holden ZB Commodore and Buick Regal in the United States, has been in production for just over a year now though, it would likely be that PSA could be testing out other components instead of replacing the old GM sourced engines so early.
