Like with the entry-level 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol in the A200 and the 1.5-litre turbodiesel in the A180d, the new mid-range motor in the A200d is sourced from the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, and also displaces 1.5-litres but with respective outputs of 110kW/320Nm.
Available in Sport and AMG Line trim levels, the A200d will complete the 0-100km/h dash in 8.1 seconds, and top out at 220km/h while consuming diesel at a rate of 4.2-litres/100km.
The next step-up A220d now serves as the flagship model and produces 140kW/400Nm from its Benz developed 2.0-litre motor, which the three-pointed star claims will see it finish the benchmark sprint in seven seconds flat, and reach a V-max of 235km/h. Combined consumption is a claimed 4.3-litres/100km.
In the case of both models, drive is routed to the front wheels via the new eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox that debut in the new B-class at the Paris Motor Show last month. Unlike the A200d though, the A220d comes with the AMG Line pack as standard.
While Mercedes-Benz South Africa has confirmed the A180d for local availability next year, no word on either the A200d or A220d has yet been made. In the UK, pricing for the A200d Sport kicks-off at £28 805 (R534 152) with the AMG Line adding an addition £1 200 (R22 252). Pricing for the A220d AMG Line is pegged at £31 575 (R585 518) again without options.
