Spied by motor1.com spy photographers less than a day after the regular the GLS (main picture), the 63 betrays its identity courtesy of the GT R styled Panamericana grille, bigger alloy wheels and fatter tyres. No interior images have yet been revealed, but expect the regular GLS' to mirror that of S-class while the AMG will get its own range of unique touches.
While still decked out in significant layers of disguise and sporting oodles of pre-production bodywork, the 63's biggest change will come underneath the bonnet where the current 5.5-litre bi-turbo V8 will likely be replaced by the now ubiquitous 4.0-litre bi-turbo, which could produce as much as 441 kW versus the previous unit's 430 kW.
Mirroring the recently unveiled G-class, lesser versions of the GLS will not only use the V8 with lower outputs but also the electrified 3.0-litre straight-six petrol that debuted in the CLS 53, as well as the similarly sized diesel that can deliver up to 250 kW. A nine-speed automatic gearbox will be standard across the range.
With Mercedes-Benz set to launch the GLE first, the GLS will only become available next year with the AMG arriving either towards the end of that year or in early 2020.
