Listed for sale by South Coast Mitsubishi in Costa Mesa, California on eBay last week, the grey 2006 Lancer Evo IX MR has covered just nine miles (14 km) since new, and had reportedly been locked up in the dealership's storage area for the last 11 years as rumours about its future began emerging.
Still with its seats and pedals covered in plastic, the Evo's online placing resulted in a bidding war that eventually ended at $137 954 (R1 797 940), more than the $76 400 (R1 082 542) paid for the final Lancer, and considerably more than its original $35 189 (R458 614) asking price.
Unlike the more powerful MR FQ models sold in the UK, the US-spec Evo IX MR, aside from doing without the FQ suffix, came powered by a 210 kW version of the stalwart 2.0-litre 4G63T turbocharged engine, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and of course four-wheel drive.
