Update
GEORGE NEWS - Regular proceedings have resumed at the George Magistrate’s Court after a burst water pipe had brought operations to a near standstill for about two weeks.
While repairs were under way, most cases were postponed or heard in the court’s basement, with strict safety measures in place.
The limited facilities, water damage and uncertainty about repair timelines caused mounting frustration among staff, attorneys and the public.
This week, court manager Patricia Matomela confirmed that the water crisis has been resolved and that the court is once again operating in its normal hours.
The disruption began when a damaged pipe led to parts of the building being flooded.
The Department of Labour reportedly implemented temporary safety protocols, which saw accused persons not in custody and other visitors accessing the court via the George Police Station’s gate.
With the repairs now completed, regular courtroom activity has resumed.
The area where a section of the waterpipe had been dug up and repaired.
