GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - A body has been retrieved from the rubble of the collapsed building on a construction site in Victoria Street, George.
Southern Cape police spokesperson said that eighteen victims with multiple injuries were transported to nearby medical facilities for medical care.
The search and rescue operation is ongoing.
Multi-disciplinary search and rescue teams descended to assist. These teams will be coordinated by EMS specialist from a joint operational centre.
A crane from Mossel Bay has arrived on the scene.
Wouter Kriel, Spokesperson for Anton Bredell, minister of local government, says support coordinated by Provincial Disaster Management is on its way to George.
This includes three heavy crane trucks, heavy lifting and technical equipment, a structural collapse vehicle and 53 EMS staff members. Rescue efforts will be able to continue through the night.
