GEORGE NEWS - The April offerings of the local University of the Third Age starts with Armchair Travel on Wednesday 12 April, which takes the audience to Venice with Daleen Engelbrecht. The meeting is at Emmaüs and the talk starts at 10:30.
Engelbrecht is married to Schalk, and shares his love for travel. She has been involved with the George Camera Club for some time and is currently its public relations officer.
Engelbrecht is an excellent photographer, well known for her beautifully compiled audiovisuals, and has also been involved in some film making.
At the Friday lecture on 14 April, Case Rijsdijk continues his astronomy series with a talk titled "Diamonds in the sky". He says, "Of two things you can be sure: none of us will live forever and we will pay tax! Stars are no different as they too are born, live and die, though their tax is different."
In this lecture he will look at how stars are born, live and die, stellar evolution, how all the elements are formed, and why stars twinkle at night like diamonds - which some of them are. This lecture starts at 10:30.

On Friday 21 April, Mike Sankey will deliver a lecture entitled "Amazing coincidences of the battle of Rourke's Drift". This talk uncovers some remarkable coincidences of the day of the two battles of Isandlwana and the afternoon repeat performance of Rourke's Drift on 22 and 23 January 1879.
Sankey is a retired member of the BSA Police in Zimbabwe. After leaving he became a prospector for Anglo American Prospecting Services. Tea is at 10:00 and the talk starts at 10:30.

At the general meeting on Wednesday 26 April, Chris Mobsby will give a talk called "Royalty in stamps". With the attention on the British Royal family and the upcoming coronation of King Charles, this talk reviews the practice of featuring royalty on postage stamps.
Mobsby is a very keen philatelist who has exhibited his collection widely and was rewarded with the invitation to sign the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists. Tea is at 10:00 and the talk starts at 10:30.
On Friday 28 April, Case Rijsdijk gives the fifth talk in his astronomy course and discusses "Cities of stars". He will look at the Milky Way, other galaxies, galactic structure and galactic cannibalism and dark matter. This talk starts at 10:30.
