GEORGE NEWS - Attending the lectures of the University of the Third Age (U3A) is a journey that is sure to expand your general knowledge and at the same time enjoy a spirit of community.
In August, they are dishing up yet another varied and interesting programme starting on Thursday 8 August with a lecture in the Anthropology series, titled 'San rock art in the Outeniqua', presented by popular lecturer Hugo Leggatt. The talk starts at 10:30.
On Wednesday 14 August in Armchair Travel, Mike Sankey will take the audience 'Travelling through Namibia by rural sidecar to the Kunene river and back'.
This trip was organised to accompany his friend, Mad Mark, who wanted to see the Kunene river on the border between Namibia and Angola. It stretches over 4 800km along the west coast going north, and then through the centre of the country, past Etosha, and home again. This is an illustrated talk and one not to be missed. It starts at 10:30.
In Friday Lecture on 23 August, Anneke de Jong will talk about 'Pharmacy: pills, prescriptions and possibilities'.
The pharmaceutical industry has evolved immensely over the years. This talk will go briefly into the history of the industry and show how it has changed to what it is today.
It will touch on subjects such as generic medicine, medical aids, laws and regulations, as well as the services that you can expect from your local pharmacy. Refreshments are at 10:00 and the talk starts at 10:30.
On Monday 26 August, Case Rijsdijk will host another discussion on International Affairs that is always interesting. This starts at 14:00.
To end the month, in the general meeting, David Barnes will talk about the various 'Legends of the Tele Valley'.
The Tele Valley, that demarcates the border between South Africa and Lesotho, is at the confluence of the Tele and Blikana rivers. Barnes grew up in the former Transkei and knows the Xhosa people well, speaking their language fluently.
