GEORGE NEWS - A big truck got stuck this morning in the historical pass between George and Wilderness on the Seven Passes road, the umpteenth such incident that George Herald has reported on in the recent past.
The truck was apparently travelling from the direction of Wilderness and is standing just before the Kaaimans River bridge, the first bridge on the road from the east.
Marius Neethling, operations manager of the Cape Town branch of EPS Courier Services, the owners of the truck, told the newspaper that a recovery team has been sent from Knysna to help.
Provincial Traffic Chief Quinton Williams said traffic officials have also been sent to the scene to assist.
Neethling said the driver was supposed to travel on the N2. "At this stage it is unsure why he had turned off from the main route, but the matter will be thoroughly investigated and if required, the necessary disciplinary steps taken against him. As far as we know he had been driving on his GPS.”
He said this is the first such incident that EPS has had since the company started doing deliveries in the Garden Route in 2008.
“We appoint only drivers with more than five years’ experience and they get thorough training. Most of our drivers are familiar with the area. At the moment we are at a loss as to what happened and why the driver took this route. The recovery team will do their utmost best to clear the way as soon as possible. We apologise to the public for any inconvenience caused.”
The driver told Jeff Ayliffe from Group Editors Live that he had followed his GPS, which did not indicate that the road was closed.
George Herald has in the past reported on several similar incidents in this historic pass.
In one incident Heritage Western Cape took legal steps against a company whose truck had damaged the Silver River bridge. The pass is currently open only for access to residents and large sign boards prohibiting thoroughfare are displayed at both entrances to the pass.
