GEORGE NEWS - Beloved local accordion player and retired advocate, Dr. Lukas du Preez' life was cut short this morning in a car crash on Welgelegen Boulevard.
The incident happened shortly before 09:00 when Du Preez, driving from the Farmer's Market towards the Sasol garage, crashed into a large truck trailer parked on the opposite side of the road.
Du Preez is understood to have died on impact. Immediate family members and some of Du Preez' friends were at the scene.
Du Preez became a familiar face and personality in 2021 when he played the accordion outside the Covid ward of the Life Bayview Hospital in Mossel Bay where his wife was a patient at the time.
He again brought light to the lives of victims of tragedy during the Victoria Street disaster when he played music to grieving relatives of the missing and deceased outside the town hall.
