GEORGE NEWS - A former captain of the Thembalethu Police Station, Mzole Crosby Mtabati (53), who has been charged with defeating the ends of justice, will make his next court appearance on Friday 9 September.
According to a spokesperson for the Hawks, Zinzi Hani, Mtabati was arrested by the Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation team for tampering with evidence connected to a business robbery at the Puma garage in Thembalethu on 31 January.
"During a search and seizure operation of his office they [the Hawks] discovered empty cartridges that had been removed from the crime scene," she said.
After his arrest he appeared in the Them-balethu Magistrate's Court on 22 March where he was released on bail of R1 000. Following a disciplinary enquiry he was dismissed from the police force in June. However, the criminal case has not yet been finalised as he is still on trial and has not been sentenced.
But for Mtabati the water keeps getting hotter as he is now facing an additional charge of defeating the ends of justice after he allegedly destroyed evidence linked to a murder in Tabata Street, Thembalethu, in October 2020.
He will appear in the Thembalehtu Magistrate's Court on both charges in September.
