GARDEN ROUTE NEWS AND VIDEO - The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 4 storm warning for the Garden Route, as well as a Level 5 storm warning for the Tsitsikamma region.
These warnings come off the back of a storm surge and spring high tide that has struck South Africa's Southern Cape this weekend.
The Level 5 warning issued for Tsitsikamma indicated that abnormal/rogue waves are possible, vessels at risk of taking on water and capsizing, there could be damage to beaches and medium to large vessels could anchor/break mooring lines.
"Small boats are advised to stay away from the open sea and seek the shelter of a harbour. In the harbour, moor the boats properly with ample fenders," the warning said. The public is also urged to steer away from beaches and/or the waterfront, to avoid any possible injury.
In the Garden Route, the SAWS Level 4 warning included: difficulty in navigation at sea for small vessels, disruptions at susceptible harbours and ports for short periods, damage to coastal infrastructure is possible, small vessels at risk of taking on water and capsizing in locality and localised build-up of sand on coastal routes.
"Be aware of large unpredictable waves along the coast. Small vessels are advised to seek shelter in harbours, bays or inlets. Be aware of strong rip currents especially during spring tides."
Garden Route District Municipality's Manager of Disaster Management Gerhard Otto confirmed that the worst of the worst seemed to have come and gone for the Garden Route. "Our observations show the stormy weather moving east at the moment, past the Garden Route," he said.
