GEORGE NEWS - Visitors to the Southern Cape Orchid Society’s annual Spring Orchid Show over the weekend were treated to a delightful exhibition of some 300 plants and about 50 different species.
Participants went all out to create beautiful stalls according to the theme ‘Welcome to Wonderland’.
Fiona Barnwell won the trophy for the best stall and also took home eight first prizes.
“The Southern Cape Society is the only one in the country that builds stalls for our annual exhibition, and it is quite challenging. We put a lot of thought and effort into it,” she said.
Her interest in orchids, which started in 1992, developed from her passion for gardening. In keeping with the Wonderland theme, she chose to incorporate elements from Alice in Wonderland into her stall, creating a true fairytale garden showing off an amazing variety of flowering species.
The Spring Show is the society’s annual fundraiser.
