"It is what we targeted for and we are thankful that we could achieve it. Millions have been spent by the department in the Western Cape and their aid has really borne fruit."
The school's English teacher, Ruth Crause, said she was proud of her pupils especially those who, despite challenging circumstances and for whom English is their third language, have done well and have all passed the subject.
"Many extra classes and lots of aid from the department helped the children to really excel, also those who have always struggled," she said.
Of the 114 matrics at PW Botha, 42,1 per cent achieved a Bachelor's Pass, 41,2 per cent a Diploma Pass and 16,7 per cent a Higher Certificate Pass.
Parkdene High showed a slight improvement with a pass rate of 91,1 per cent compared to 90,2 per cent in 2012. Of the 155 matrics, 13 failed, 38 achieved a Bachelor's Pass, 55 a Diploma Pass and 41 a Higher Certificate Pass. Principal Pieter Louw said he was satisfied. "I am especially happy with the quality of the passes that have improved. In maths the pass rate improved from 79 per cent to 86 per cent, which we attribute to more focus on the subject and after hours classes."
Pacaltsdorp High Principal Neville Raubenheimer said their pass rate increased slightly from 92,7 per cent in 2012 to 94,1 per cent. A total of 26,1 per cent matrics achieved a Bachelor's Pass, 58,3 per cent a Diploma Pass and 15,6 per cent a Higher Certificate Pass.
