The Roelcor Meat truck had been diverted off the N2 when it was temporarily closed due to another accident on the bridge over the Kaaimans River on Tuesday morning.
The driver, Johan Stuurman and two assistants, Francois Stoffels and Siphamandla Hans had earlier been diverted by law enforcement officials onto the old Saasveld Road as this was the only alternate route to Knysna. Stuurman said that the load must have shifted in the windy section of the old road. Stoffels said it was a strange feeling. "It felt as if we were being pulled over by some magical force."
Eden District Council Environmental Health practitioners Dan Safoor and Theresa Jansen Van Vuuren were on the scene to inspect the load.
"When food is involved in an accident we immediately come and investigate if it is still fit for human consumption. We will wait for the relief truck to remove the carcasses and then we will follow it back to the factory where it will be inspected," said Safoor.
