GEORGE NEWS - In light of Covid-19, the Eden Lions Club in George is calling on anyone who wants to join them to help those in need.
"In no way do we underplay the tragedy many of our citizens have suffered in losing a loved one due to Covid-19 and our hearts go out to all those families who have been affected," says Carl van Blerk, a former president of the club, "but the underlying disaster and one that is arguably far more devastating than Covid-19, is that of unemployment and rising hunger issues surrounding the growing poverty."
He says that since the start of the virus outbreak, the Eden Lions Club has been an integral part of working with local government, private business and other NGOs in sourcing and providing much-needed food relief, and that they have been an active force in combating poverty and providing aid at times of disaster since its charter over a decade ago.
"The men and women who volunteer their services are no less than local heroes, often working behind the scenes and at all hours of the day and night when the need arises. Lions live by the motto that service to others is the rent we pay for the space we occupy on the Earth - and Lions truly do pay their rent," he said.
This process continues to this day and is run under very strict distribution controls and management, ensuring fair and responsible use of the donations received from the community.
The need is not over - in fact, it will be with us for a long time still while the economy battles to recover and some sense of normality strives to break through.
Those who want to join the club and work together with a team of like-minded people with the single vision of seeing a better world, are asked to send an e-mail to carl@edenlions.org.za or leave a WhatsApp message on 082 826 0731.
